What is Air Quality?

In 1970, Congress created the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and passed the Clean Air Act (CAA) giving the federal government authority to clean up air pollution. Since then, EPA and the states, tribes, local governments, industry, and enviromental groups have worked together to establish a variety of programs to reduce air pollution levels across America.

Air pollution can damage trees, crops, other plants, lakes and animals. In addition to damaging the natural environment, air pollution also damages buildings, monuments, and statues. It not only reduces how far you can see in national parks and cities, it even interferes with aviation. Air pollution is a global problem because it travels throughout the hemisphere.
The health, environmental, and economic impacts of air pollution are significant. Each day, air pollution causes thousands of illnesses leading to lost days at work and school. Air pollution also reduces agricultural crops yields and cost billions of dollars each year.

The CAA requires EPA to set National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for six common air pollutants. These are commonly known as criteria pollutants and are found throughout the United States. Also referred to as particulate matter these pollutants can harm both the environment and your health.

Tribal New Source Review - What are Minor Sources?

For purposes of this rule, minor sources are sources which emit or have the Potential To Emit (PTE) any regulated NSR pollutant in amounts less than the major source thresholds for those pollutants.

These minor sources, which are currently regulated, constitute a significant percentage of the total number of sources in Indian Country.

Examples of minor sources could include gasoline stations, dry cleaners, spray paint operations, auto repair shops, sewage treatment facilities, sawmills, clay & ceramic operations (kilns),casting foundry,grain elevators,
