Tribal Youth Environmental Summer Camp


The mission of the Tribal Youth Environmental Summer Camp (TYESC) is to provide high school students with hands-on experience in the sciences and monitoring techniques. The first week focuses on environmental monitoring methods and the second week focuses on GPS/GIS techniques. There is no cost to attend the camp.


  • Expose youth to Natural Resouces & Agricultural Sciences through management activities;
  • Increasing the amount of interaction with tribal environmental/natural resource professionals, and consultants;
  • Increase the students' awareness relating to plant, animals & environmental issues;
  • Provide practical field experience that tribal professionals face every day;
  • Relate the relevance of environmental protection & natural resource management to their individual cultures;
  • Expose students to sustainable agriculture & farming with cultural preservation views;
  • Provide students a base of technical applied knowledge as they prepare for higher education & expose the students to the college environment;
  • Create an awareness of potential job opportunities for college graduates not only within their own tribal communities, but potentially within all participating partners of this project.

2017 TYESC was hosted by Jicarilla Apache Nation and SIPI Campus. This was our largest camp with 40 students from a variety of Pueblos, and Cities. Thank you to those who attended!
